Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

What is CAD Preprocessor?
CAD Preprocessor is a Windows based application which extracts the bend information in the form of XYZ coordinates/FPB values from pipe designs in IGS/IGES format.
Top

Is CAD Preprocessor, a free application?
No, CAD Preprocessor is a commercial application.
Top

Does CAD Preprocessor require graphics card for running?
No, CAD Preprocessor doesn’t need graphics card for running.
Top

What are the functionalities of CAD Preprocessor?
Even though bend data extraction is the prime function of CAD Preprocessor, the application allows export of CAD data in IGS/IGES formats, snapshot of drawing in jpg/bmp/gif formats and CAD report generation.

IMPORT & EXPORT

How can I import a CAD file into CAD Preprocessor?
You can import a CAD file by clicking on Import item in File menu or Import button on the toolbar. You can alternately use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+I.
Top

How can I export the drawing to IGS/IGES format?
You can export the drawing by clicking on Export item in File menu or Export button on the toolbar or can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+E.
Top

What all types of selection are available in CAD Preprocessor?
Application supports three types namely Edge, Face and Object selection.
Top

How can I select the edges for manual routing of piping diagram?
For selecting the edges, you have to change the display context to selection mode by clicking on Selection Mode button on left side of the window or Select item on Tools menu. Then switch selection type to edge selection by clicking Selection>>Edge on Edit menu or Edge button on toolbar. Now keeping Shift key pressed click on each radial edge(circular edge) of the drawing.
Top

How can I take a screen capture of imported CAD file?
You can take the screen capture of the drawing by clicking the Screen Shot button from File group on the toolbar or tapping the key combination Ctrl+C. The screen capture can be saved in jpeg, bmp, gif file formats.
Top

When I import piping models with uneven ends, fittings or holes, I get a message telling failure of automatic parsing, what can I do?
Automatic parsing is supported only for regular cylindrical piping model, for those models with irregularities in its surface, use Manual mode for getting the bend information.
Top

Does CAD Preprocessor supports all kind of IGS/IGES files?
No, even though CAD processor allows import of all kinds of IGS/IGES files, but extraction of bend information is possible only for files containing single continuous cylindrical piping models.
Top

How can I get the filename of currently loaded CAD file?
The filename of currently loaded CAD file is shown on right side of window title bar.
Top

3D OPERATIONS

What are the modes of operation that CAD Preprocessor supports?
CAD Preprocessor supports both automatic and manual modes. In automatic mode, the routing process to extract bend data is done by the program, and is also the default mode while importing a file. In case of failure of automatic mode, the application switches to manual mode, where the user have to give some instructions on how to proceed with bend data extraction.
Top

How can I use the manual mode for bend data extraction?
For using manual mode, you have to group select each radial edges(circular edges) in order from one end to another. Then select Manual tab on right side of the window and click "Calc XYZ" button.
Top

How can I restore the drawing to fit the screen after pan/zoom operations?
Click "Fit All" button on the left side of window.
Top

How can I see the 3D coordinate axis?
The XYZ axis is visible by default. You can change its visibility by switching Axis button on On/Off group of toolbar or by tapping the key combination Ctrl+A.
Top

How can I clean up the centerline and edge selections after bend data calculation?
The drawing can be restored to its original form by clicking the Reset button on Reset group of toolbar or by using the shortcut keys Ctrl+R.
Top

How can I clear the imported CAD drawing?
Press "Delete All" button on Reset group of toolbar.
Top

How can I change the view of imported drawing?
You can get the required view by clicking appropriate button from Views group of toolbar or can be selected from View menu.
Top

What is the function of button named “Reverse XYZ Points”?
The bend information is calculated with respect to one end, which is the start end. Reverse XYZ Points button allows calculation of bend information with respect to the other end(opposite end).
Top

What does “Shift To Origin” button do?
The Shift To Origin button translates the start end of pipe to origin(0,0,0) and then calculates the bend parameters with respect to this new start point, ie. (0,0,0).
Top

What is the default measurement unit of CAD Preprocessor?
The default unit of length measurement is millimeter and angle measurement is degree.
Top

How can I get the centerline of a piping model?
Import the CAD file, use Manual or Automatic process to get the centerline.
Top

When I move mouse pointer over the drawing, there comes stray lines on the screen, what can I do?
This phenomenon occurs if your graphics driver is outdated, update your graphics driver to the latest version.
Top

Is it valid to select manually, inner and outer radial edges in case of a thick pipe for bend sequence extraction?
Yes, this operation is valid. But the pipe diameter calculation is based on the first radial edge you select.
Top

How CAD Preprocessor identifies a pipe diameter if the design has multiple pipes with different pipe diameters?
In automatic mode, the diameter of the first edge parsed is considered as the diameter of the pipe. Similarly, the diameter of the first selected edge will be takes as the pipe diameter.
Top

Why selection changes when switching between wireframe and shaded modes?
This is a normal behavior, selections are cleared while switching between wireframe and shaded modes. This applies to edge, face and shape selection.
Top

Only a portion of the pipe is center lined for models with end forms in automatic mode, Why?
Currently application doesn’t support automatic bend sequence extraction for piping models with end forms. But in some models, application succeeds in extracting bend information from regular pipe portion of the design, and hence only in that portion the center line is displayed.
